Wire Preparation
Wire nuts: Multipacks are recommended because they are cheaper and offer a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors (when you’re up several stories in a bucket truck under poor lighting colors can make wire identification much easier.
Electrician's Tape (A.K.A Butyl Tape): ½'', name-brand (SUPERIOR ADHESIVE) works best for preventing wire-wire continuity breaks (wire shorts) from blowing fuses. However, BUTYL TAPE SHOULD ONLY BE USED IN THE ABSENCE OF WIRE NUTS OR B-CONNECTORS. TIP: Butyl tape which is stretch will eventually tear yielding a useless piece.
This is especially true under cold working conditions. SOLUTION: Use electrician's or general purpose scissors to cut perfect sections.
LED Head Lamp: When a lengthy install takes you into the evening, be prepared with an LED head lamp. LEDs offer superior battery life and evenly distributed light. The Energizer® 6-LED headlight will last up to 50 hours and can be found at local home improvements stores.
